16 Nov Meet Wedding Vendor – SJM Calligraphy
Today, we are so thrilled to introduce a local wedding vendor! Sarah Morales is a wedding calligrapher based in Boone, NC. We are absolutely in love with her talent, and we’re so excited that she agreed to talk with us. In this post, you’ll see her fabulous work, and learn what makes her tick. So without further ado, we introduce you to this fellow creative!
2. How long have you been a calligrapher, and what sparked your interest to become one?
I have been a calligrapher for about 2 years now. I have always loved to write ever since I learned cursive in 3rd grade. When I was young, I explored different writing styles and incorporated it into my design. It wasn’t until 2 years ago, that I really pursued it. My best friends encouraged me to create my pretty handwriting into a business and here we are!
3. What do you love most about being a calligrapher?
I LOVE connecting with my clients. It is so cool to met someone I have emailed with over a period of 6 months and feel like I am best friends with them! For example, I had been emailing this bride from April-August (while working on her products). When it was time to drop off her products, we made a coffee date out of it and ended up talking for 3 hours. It makes me job so much more worth it when I get to connect with the people I am creating for.
4. What is so unique about SJM Calligraphy? (Describe your style.)
I believe every event/occasion is special and unique. That is why every order that comes my way is never just information planted into a template. I incorporate your unique and beautiful style while also keeping my own.
5. What happens after a couple submits an inquiry to you?
Well, it’s kind of a process haha. Usually people will ask about my price guide so we start with that. I want my couples to have time to discuss what they can afford financially. Weddings are expensive and I understand that! Sometimes we talk about package prices and sometimes we just dive right in. Every inquiry looks different and it keeps things interesting!
6. As a calligrapher, what is a typical wedding day like?
Wedding days always look different. Sometimes I don’t even see the wedding! Wedding planners will come and get the products from me a couple days before and take it from there. Other times, I am creating on-site (usually chalkboards). I just go with the flow and make loopy words.
7. What should every couple know or do before they book a calligrapher?
Couples should look at a calligrapher’s style and see if it is something that they love. Usually what you see on their website is what you are going to get. Speaking for myself, I have unique style of writing and I stay true to it. When couples are wanting me to change the way I write, it means changing SJM Calligraphy as a whole.
8.What type of advice do you have for couples seeking the best calligrapher for their wedding needs?
Hire someone that you connect with. I know that’s hard when 99% of the communication is through email, but it makes the whole process so much more enjoyable and easy. I can tell from the first email if I am going to connect well with a client and that gets me so excited!
